The concept of working remotely has transformed from a trend to a necessity in recent times, but what if you could take it a step further? Picture yourself seated on a sun-kissed terrace, overlooking the turquoise waters of Tulum, Mexico, with your laptop open and your mind brimming with inspiration.
That was my reality in March, and it was nothing short of transformative.
Thanks to the Publicis Groupe Work Your World program, I spent four weeks on the Caribbean coastline dialing into brainstorms, leading client meetings, and executing campaigns as if I was still at our Toronto office.
One of the most remarkable aspects of working remotely in Tulum was the unexpected boost in productivity. Despite the easy distraction of my breathtaking surroundings, I found myself more focused and driven than ever before. Perhaps it was the change of scenery or the smell of new air, but every task seemed more manageable, and every idea flowed more effortlessly.
Despite being thousands of kilometres away from my team, I was able to remain easily accessible and felt seamlessly connected. This smooth integration of remote work allowed me to maintain a healthy work-life balance without sacrificing the quality of my contributions.
Tulum offered the perfect blend of work and wellness activities. As someone who is extremely passionate about yoga and meditation, I was able to strike the perfect balance between practicing mindfulness amidst my busy workdays. After a productive day, I would venture out to explore the local culture, indulge in authentic cuisine, and connect with other like-minded nomads embarking on a similar journey. This not only rejuvenated my spirit, but also fueled my creativity in unexpected ways.
Bringing home a renewed mindset
I managed to cultivate a real appreciation for the little things, like drinking your coffee on a balcony overlooking the trees and being able to take your lunch with the sun hitting your face. These small breaks were little pockets of joy that had such a positive effect on my mindset. Take a break – something we often forget to do in the fast-paced world we live in, yet it goes such a long way.
While it’s easy to say that being in a beautiful sunny place is the easy fix, I learned something even more valuable: wherever you go, there you’ll be. I realized that the balance and mindset I was able to embrace while I was away, is something I could also carry home with me. While it doesn’t look the same, I have found ways to tap into that energy now that I am home.
My remote work experience was a testament to the limitless possibilities of the Work Your World program. It taught me that productivity knows no boundaries and that creativity thrives in the most unexpected places. So, if you ever find yourself yearning for a change of scenery, consider taking your work abroad. Who knows? It might just be the best decision you ever make.
